During the Spring semester I started actively trying to be more social. I began greeting familiar faces and enthusiastically engaged with the people around me. This also led to me going to more campus events. Of these, my favorites have been the ones hosted by Davidson’s sustainability office. My roommate, Kate Cross, is one of the office’s employees, so I would often get a bit more of an insider’s perspectives on their events.
One of the office’s events entailed watching a powerful documentary about fast fashion. The documentary focused on the human cost of the industry, and brought the viewers’ attention to the underpaid and poorly treated workers who produce fast fashion clothing. It really drove home how much I take for granted.
I also find that it fits well with Humes’ theme of the body. The things we use to cover our bodies and differentiate ourselves from others, in a way, come at the expense of other bodies.
